Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard: the categories explained and factors that move you between them.

The cost premium for better rate class moves vary by carrier and underwriter, but the range—perhaps a few dollars monthly to meaningfully more—can be substantial.

What underwriters look at

Height-to-weight ratio, blood pressure and lipid levels, close relatives' heart attack or cancer before turning 60, speeding tickets and claims, past medications, job and leisure activities, and whether you smoke or use nicotine. Reaching the top tier demands excellent marks in almost everything; Preferred permits minor imperfections; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate managed issues like controlled blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

Your health self-assessment is important: Excellent becomes Preferred Plus, Very good becomes Preferred, Good becomes Standard Plus, and Average becomes Standard. Quotes reflect your selected class; the carrier verifies it during underwriting. Unsure which class fits? Quote multiple categories to compare results, then let underwriting finalize the rating. Overstating health won't reduce your actual cost; it just makes your estimate less realistic.

Susman Insurance Agency helps match you with carriers whose underwriting is most favorable for your situation—often more important than advertised rates.
