Incorporated on January 1, 2000, Rancho Santa Margarita is a master-planned community built on the Plano Trabuco plateau in Orange County.
Rancho Santa Margarita sits on a high plateau in the eastern portion of Orange County, bordered by Mission Viejo, Coto de Caza, Trabuco Canyon, and the Cleveland National Forest. The city was incorporated on January 1, 2000, making it one of Orange County's youngest cities. It was designed from the outset as a master-planned community, where residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, parks, and schools were laid out together rather than growing piecemeal over time.
The 2020 census counted 47,949 residents in Rancho Santa Margarita, a population that has remained relatively stable over the past decade. The community includes Rancho Santa Margarita Lake, central parks, and a public library among its amenities. Two school districts serve the area—Saddleback Valley Unified and Capistrano Unified—providing access to schools, though some are located just outside city limits in neighboring areas.
